A beginner’s guide to hiking
I’m writing this post after some people asked me to write a Dummy’s Guide to trekking. They must’ve been thinking that if a bum like me can do it, anyone can. Anyhow, I’m not an expert in anything and can only provide a few links about people who are good at it and my own story. I’ll write about physical fitness, logistics and planning for such a trip. Keep in mind that I’m not an experienced hiker/camper/trekker by any stretch of imagination. If anything is wrong, please let me know. So, without further ado:
EQUIPMENT
For all their beauty, mountains can be dangerous and unforgiving. A good quality mountain/trekking gear helps a lot in making life easier as well as safer. Emphasis should be on reliability and low weight. It’s tough to find replacement on perform repairs in most of remote mountainous places. Also, if you are trekking, it’s very important that your luggage should be as light as possible. Every gram counts. Try using one thing in more than one way. Basic trekking gear includes :
1) Rucksack: Go for the biggest, sturdiest and lightest you can. They come in different sizes 50, 60 65, 70 liters etc and in top loading and front loading designs. It’s easier to pack and unpack stuff if it can be loaded from front. Also check if your back and shoulders are comfortable with padding and support. Most are adjustable, but be sure. Buy a rain cover if not included. You may or may not need a smaller backpack for your treks around your campsite. Choose wisely.
2) Sleeping bag & mat: Choose one depending upon weather conditions. They are rated according to thermal ratings for minimum temperatures 10, 5, 0, -5 , -10 degree centigrade. A mat is necessary to provide thermal insulation from ground. They both usually weigh 1 to 2 kg
3) Tent It should be lightweight, waterproof and have enough space for your gear. They too are classified according to weather and terrain conditions. Some can be just taken out of pack and unfolded within seconds. Others need poles to setup. It isn’t hard and can be done within a few minutes. But make sure that the process is not complicated and you can do it without any assistance. When buying, ask for a demonstration....
